Why measure directly in the melt?
In extrusion, the key properties of the final product – composition, color, dispersion of additives, contamination or degradation – are defined while the material is still molten. Yet in many plants, quality is still checked afterwards: samples are taken, cooled, prepared and analysed in the laboratory. By the time the result is available, the process has moved on, and any off-spec material has already been produced.
ColVisTec’s product-contact optical probes are installed directly in the extruder or melt line. They measure the material at the very point where quality is created – without sampling, without off-line analysis delays and without interrupting the product flow.
What does inline process monitoring mean?
Inline means that the measurement becomes part of the process itself. Spectra are recorded continuously on the flowing product, every ten seconds or faster, so that 100% of the output is inspected instead of a few random samples. Deviations become visible within seconds and can be corrected before they turn into waste.
